WhatsApp went down and New Year’s Eve plans become nightmares
WhatsApp trending on Twitter is not a good way to end 2015. Many users across Europe were reporting outages for the popular messaging app Friday. The U.K., Belgium. and, Germany appeared to be the hardest hit by the outage.
WhatsApp has not addressed the potential outage on its social channels. On Twitter, many users are doing what they do best when there’s a potential problem. Many are reporting WhatsApp is down using the hashtag #Whatsapp while others are saying it’s fine and still others are sharing jokes about the issue. Some speculate the many new year messages from Australia and the Southern Hemisphere may be at fault for the outage.
Based on Twitter, WhatsApp connectivity has periodically returned, only for the messaging app to go down again.
The first WhatsApp connection problems were reported around 11:28 a.m. EST on the DownDetector website. The reports peaked at more than 6,000. A WhatsApp spokesperson did not comment on the reasons for the outage, the Daily Mail reported. “Some people had trouble accessing WhatsApp for a short period earlier today. We’ve restored service back to 100 percent for everyone and we apologize for the inconvenience,” the spokesperson said.
Based on DownDetector‘s outage map, there are minor issues in the U.S. and South America — with the New York region and parts of Brazil reporting connection issues. Madrid, London, Dublin, Munich, Berlin, Hamburg and Zürich have filed the most reports. Problems were reported in Paris, Vienna, Rome, Barcelona and parts of India.
